A Musical Approach to Language Learning

Vanessa Chang · May 6, 2025 · Leave a Comment

"Music is one of the most powerful tools for learning English, blending rhythm and meaning to help you absorb language naturally and joyfully."

At Curio, we understand that learning English can be challenging, but who says it can’t be enjoyable? Music serves as an excellent tool for language acquisition, embedding vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural nuances in memorable melodies. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore how songs can significantly enhance your English language skills and share our top recommendations across various genres to make your learning journey both effective and entertaining.

Why Songs Are Effective for English Language Learning

As language learning specialists, we at Curio have observed that music creates neural connections that traditional study methods simply cannot match. When you listen to songs, your brain processes language differently—engaging both hemispheres and creating stronger memory associations. Here’s why incorporating music into your English learning routine yields remarkable results:

1. Natural Rhythm and Pronunciation

Songs showcase the natural rhythm, stress patterns, and intonation of English. The melodic structure helps learners intuitively grasp pronunciation without becoming overwhelmed by complex phonetic rules. The rhythmic patterns make it easier to remember how words should sound and flow together in authentic speech.

2. Memorable Vocabulary Acquisition

Lyrics set to music are significantly more memorable than isolated vocabulary lists. Research consistently demonstrates that information paired with melody remains in long-term memory more effectively. At Curio, we’ve found that learners can recall song lyrics years after hearing them, along with their contextual meanings.

3. Grammar in Context

Rather than studying grammar rules in isolation, songs present grammatical structures in natural contexts. This contextual learning helps you understand how English actually functions in real communication, moving beyond theoretical understanding to practical usage.

4. Cultural Insights

Music reflects cultural values, historical events, and societal norms. By engaging with English songs, you gain insights into English-speaking cultures that textbooks rarely provide. This cultural literacy is crucial for genuine language mastery.

5. Emotional Connection

Learning through music creates an emotional connection to the language. When you associate positive feelings with English through songs you enjoy, motivation increases naturally, making consistent practice sustainable over time.

How to Use Songs Effectively for English Learning

At Curio, we recommend the following approach to maximise the benefits of music in your language learning journey:

  1. Active Listening: Don’t just play songs in the background. Listen actively, focusing on the lyrics and their pronunciation.
  2. Lyrics Study: Read along with lyrics while listening. This connects written and spoken forms of the language.
  3. Sing Along: Practice pronunciation by singing along after you’ve become familiar with the lyrics.
  4. Vocabulary Mining: Identify new words and phrases, look them up, and create a personal vocabulary list from each song.
  5. Cultural Context: Research the background of songs to understand cultural references and idioms.
  6. Varied Genres: Explore different musical genres to expose yourself to various vocabulary sets and speech patterns.

Best Songs for English Learners by Proficiency Level

Photo by David Yu on Pexels

For Beginners

Beginners benefit most from songs with clear pronunciation, repetitive choruses, and simple vocabulary. Our Curio team recommends:

“Count on Me” by Bruno Mars

This uplifting song uses simple, everyday vocabulary with clearly articulated lyrics. The repetitive chorus (“You can count on me like one, two, three…”) reinforces basic numbers and common phrasal verbs.

“What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong

The slow tempo and descriptive lyrics make this classic particularly useful for beginners. It teaches basic descriptive vocabulary about nature and surroundings while being easy to follow.

“Let It Be” by The Beatles

The clear pronunciation and repetitive chorus make this song accessible to novice English learners. The limited vocabulary and straightforward sentence structures provide excellent practice without overwhelming newcomers.

For Intermediate Learners

At this level, songs with more complex vocabulary and varied grammatical structures become beneficial:

“Someone Like You” by Adele

Adele’s clear diction and the emotional narrative help intermediate learners grasp more complex expressions of feelings and storytelling in English. The song introduces past tense constructions naturally.

“Imagine” by John Lennon

This song offers philosophical vocabulary and conditional structures (“Imagine there’s no heaven…”), helping learners expand beyond concrete language into more abstract expression.

“Hotel California” by The Eagles

Rich in metaphorical language and storytelling, this song helps intermediate learners begin to appreciate figurative language while enjoying a classic rock narrative.

For Advanced Learners

Advanced learners can challenge themselves with songs featuring complex vocabulary, cultural references, and linguistic wordplay:

“Stan” by Eminem

This narrative song offers colloquial language, slang, and complex storytelling through its epistolary format. The varying registers between verses and chorus provide excellent examples of code-switching in English.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen

With its operatic sections, varied tempos, and rich vocabulary, this epic composition challenges even advanced learners while introducing them to theatrical language and classical references.

“Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman

This song presents a nuanced social narrative with complex emotional vocabulary and subtle use of tenses to indicate hopes, dreams, and realities.

The Science Behind Music and Language Acquisition

Photo by RF._.studio _ on Pexels

Research consistently supports that music significantly enhances language learning. Studies from neurolinguists reveal that music activates broader neural networks than traditional study methods, creating multiple pathways for retrieving language information.

A 2019 study published in the Journal of Memory and Language demonstrated that participants who learned phrases through songs showed 28% better recall after three weeks compared to those who learned through spoken repetition alone. The melodic encoding creates a “memory hook” that makes retrieval more efficient.

Additionally, the dopamine release associated with enjoying music creates positive reinforcement for learning, establishing a reward cycle that motivates continued engagement with the language.

Spotlight on Local Artists: Benjamin Kheng

Nadya Sharfina · August 28, 2024 · Leave a Comment

"Benjamin Kheng’s heartfelt anthem 'Not Alone' has captured the nation’s heart as the soundtrack of Singapore’s 2024 National Day celebrations."

At the heart of Singapore’s National Day celebrations for 2024, the theme song titled “Not Alone” has captured the nation’s attention and affection. Released on May 23, the song quickly became a social media sensation, resonating deeply with many. The talented artist behind this powerful anthem is Benjamin Kheng, whose compelling performance and heartfelt lyrics have made a significant impact.

The Early Life

Benjamin Kheng Wen Ming, born on August 15, 1990, has had a dynamic and diverse journey from a young age. From as early as six, he was immersed in the world of swimming, showcasing remarkable talent as a national youth swimmer. His dedication to the sport was evident through years of rigorous training.

Benjamin’s educational journey began at Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) and continued through Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). His passion for sports and academics led him to the Singapore Sports School, where he honed his skills both in and out of the pool. After completing his schooling, he pursued higher education at Republic Polytechnic, earning a diploma in Arts and Theatre Management. This blend of rigorous training and academic excellence laid the foundation for his future career in the arts.

Rising Career

At just 18, Benjamin Kheng was determined to make his mark in the arts. He was auditioning for every theatre play and music gig he could find, eager to find his place. It was during this time that a lecturer noticed his enthusiasm and creativity. Recognising his potential, they helped him land a job as a part-time DJ on Lush 99.5FM. This role gave Benjamin the chance to meet and interview many of his musical heroes, a significant milestone in his budding career.

A few years later, Benjamin joined the folk band The Sam Willows. As the band’s keyboardist, rhythm guitarist, and vocalist, he played a crucial role in their success. The Sam Willows made a notable impact with their music but went on hiatus in 2019. This provided Benjamin with the opportunity to focus on his solo career.

From 2019 to 2021, Benjamin released a series of singles including “They’re Wicked,” “Find Me,” “Lovers Forever,” “Make Do,” and “Fresh Feelings.” In 2023, he launched his latest album, Gloomy Boogie, showcasing his growth as an artist. Alongside his music, Benjamin has been actively involved in writing, directing, and producing comedy and musical shorts.

He co-created “The BenZi Project,” a popular online comedy sketch series on YouTube, with Singaporean YouTuber Hirzi Zulkiflie. As an advocate for youth and social causes, Benjamin also shared his experiences with depression, anxiety, and synesthesia in a TEDxYouth talk, demonstrating his commitment to using his platform for meaningful discussions.

A Singaporean Star

In August 2024, Benjamin Kheng achieved a significant milestone by being chosen to sing the theme song for Singapore’s National Day Parade. Titled “Not Alone,” Kheng not only performed the song but also wrote the lyrics himself. The track quickly gained widespread acclaim on social media, garnering over 2 million views and more than 1,750 comments on YouTube within just two months of its release.

The lyrics of “Not Alone” resonate deeply with this year’s National Day theme: “Together, As One United People.” The official music video complements the song with visuals that blend images of Singapore’s past and present, capturing the essence of the nation’s journey. For Kheng, the song is a “love letter to Singapore,” featuring familiar lyrical themes that evoke nostalgia and a sense of unity.

In an interview about the song and his love for Singapore, Kheng humorously mentioned how, despite occasional bickering, Singaporeans come together fiercely when faced with external challenges. He likened this spirit to a “Singaporean megazord of fury and sass,” joking about the local pride in defending beloved dishes like laksa.

Kheng’s local hero is Julian Wong, a distinguished Singaporean artist known for his contributions as a music director, violinist, pianist, vocalist, and composer. Wong’s influence is evident in Kheng’s work, reflecting a deep respect for Singapore’s rich artistic heritage.

Nadya Sharfina · June 28, 2024 · Leave a Comment

"With 'Espresso' climbing the Billboard Hot 100, Sabrina Carpenter proves that a decade of hard work pays off."

Sabrina Carpenter has firmly established herself as one of today’s biggest pop stars. With hits like “Espresso” making waves on the Billboard Hot 100 charts this year, her popularity has skyrocketed. Despite the appearance of sudden success, Sabrina’s journey to stardom has been a decade in the making. Sabrina has been actively releasing music for the past ten years, steadily cultivating her career and now, at last, earning the recognition she has worked so hard for.

Early Life and Career

Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter, born on May 11, 1999, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, has been under the spotlight her whole life. Even from a young age, Sabrina displayed a remarkable talent and a passion for performing. She honed her skills by taking lessons in singing, dancing, and acting, laying a strong foundation for her future career.

At around the age of ten, Sabrina began to share her talent with the world by posting videos of herself singing songs by Christina Aguilera and Adele on YouTube. These videos showcased her impressive vocal abilities and garnered her early attention.

Sabrina’s first acting role came in 2011 when she landed a guest role on the NBC drama series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” This role marked the beginning of her journey in the acting world. Her big break came in 2013 when she was cast in the Disney Channel series “Girl Meets World.” This role catapulted her into the limelight and introduced her to a broader audience.

In addition to her acting career, Sabrina pursued her passion for music. Starting at sixteen, she released four albums over five years, including “Eyes Wide Open,” “Evolution,” “Singular: Act I,” and “Singular: Act II.” Remarkably, she managed to release these albums while balancing a thriving acting career.

The Breakthrough

In 2022, Sabrina Carpenter released her fifth studio album, Emails I Can’t Send, which marked a significant breakthrough in her career. The album debuted and peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 200, signalling her rising prominence in the music industry. With 18,000 album-equivalent units sold, it became her highest entry on the chart to date and garnered widespread recognition.

Emails I Can’t Send featured notable singles such as “Vicious” and “Nonsense,” which helped solidify Sabrina’s place in the pop music landscape. One of the bonus tracks, “Feather,” released as the final single in August 2023, achieved remarkable success. It peaked at number one on the US Pop Songs chart and reached number 21 on the Hot 100, further showcasing Sabrina’s growing popularity.

In June 2023, Sabrina Carpenter’s career hit another milestone when she was announced as the opening act for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Latin America, Australia, and Singapore. This opportunity exposed her to a broader audience and cemented her status as a rising star in the global music scene. For ponderings on Taylor, check out Taylor Swift’s Songs in Literary Debate.

Continuing her momentum, Sabrina released a Christmas-themed EP titled Fruitcake on November 17, 2023. She followed this with the release of the single “Espresso” on April 11, 2024. The upbeat track quickly gained traction, receiving extensive radio play and spending weeks in the top 10 of the Hot 100 chart. “Espresso” is set to feature on her upcoming sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, slated for release on August 23, 2024.

From Child Star to A-List Sensation

Sabrina Carpenter’s rise to fame has been anything but instantaneous. Her journey towards recognition took years, filled with the release of multiple albums, changes in record labels, and countless tour dates. Despite starting her career at the tender age of ten, it took significant time and effort for Sabrina to become a recognizable name in the entertainment industry.

From co-starring in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World in 2014 to appearing in over 70 episodes of the series, Sabrina worked tirelessly to build her career. By the age of 25 she has not only established herself as a promising young talent but also as a seasoned veteran with extensive experience in the spotlight and several full-length albums to her name.

Developing a loyal fan base took time and dedication. Sabrina spent years cultivating her supporters, both as a beloved TV character and as a prolific singer and actor. Her current musical stylings reflect her growth and maturity, appealing more to an adult audience than her earlier teen-focused work. This evolution has broadened her appeal and solidified her position in the industry.

Sabrina Carpenter, once a former child star, has now ascended to A-list status. Her journey is a testament to her perseverance, talent, and hard work. As she continues to evolve as an artist, her bright future seems all but assured.

Taylor Swift’s Songs in Literary Debate

Nadya Sharfina · March 2, 2024 · Leave a Comment

"Taylor Swift's lyrics resonate worldwide, capturing hearts and sparking debate on their literary depth."

Only a few musicians in popular music capture the same level of attention and affection that Taylor Swift does. Swift has established herself as one of the most influential figures in contemporary pop culture, through her catchy melodies and relatable lyrics. Her songs have a strong resonance with listeners all across the world.

As Swift continues to garner numerous prestigious awards and acclaim for her contributions to music, a more serious concern arises: Do Taylor Swift’s lyrics have any real literary value?

Narrative Structure

Many of Taylor Swift’s songs are like mini-novels set to music. They begin someplace, take us on a journey, and conclude, exactly like narratives found in books. They stand out because they explore topics such as love, heartbreak, friendship, and personal growth—the things that make life feel like a story worth telling. Taylor is a skilled storyteller, combining her experiences into relevant stories that hit close to heart.

Take “Champagne Problems,” for instance. It explores the idea of problems that might seem small to others but carry significant weight for the individual. Taylor Swift’s song paints a vivid picture of someone struggling with personal issues, like turning down a marriage. The lyrics, such as “Your mom’s ring in your pocket, My picture in your wallet, Your heart was glass, I dropped it, Champagne problems,” capture the essence of the song’s emotional depth. In her typical style, Taylor Swift’s song feels genuine and sincere, offering insight into human emotions and relationships.

Then there’s “Speak Now,” which feels like a musical version of a rom-com. With her lyrics and catchy tunes, she tells this story about a girl crashing a wedding. In the song, she urges, “Don’t say yes, just run away now. I’ll meet you at the back door when you’re out of the church. Don’t bother saying any vows.” Every verse gets us closer to the couple’s daring escape. It’s lighthearted but expertly produced, demonstrating Taylor’s exceptional storytelling ability.

Symbolism and Metaphor

Taylor Swift does more than simply create great songs and relatable lyrics; she’s also great with symbolism and metaphor. These literary techniques give her songs more depth and delicacy, allowing them to connect with listeners on a deeper level. Taylor uses sophisticated wordplay and imagery to tell stories inside her songs that are up to interpretation.

In “Red,” Taylor Swift crafts another poignant metaphor that captures the complexity of relationships. When she sings, “Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realising there’s no right answer,” She offers a realistic image of the frustration and futility that many people feel during arguments.

Taylor’s metaphor captures the sense of ambiguity and uncertainty that can occur when two people clash. Like a difficult crossword with no clear answer, the tensions she recounts leave both sides confused and uncertain of how to proceed. It’s an effective portrayal of the complexity that comes with interactions between people, where emotions, egos, and opposing viewpoints frequently collide.

Taylor’s use of metaphor may also be seen in “All Too Well.” This song is a lyrical gem. The scarf metaphor evolves into a powerful symbol of lost love and nostalgia, weaving its way through the words as a physical recollection of a previous relationship. The scarf takes on a life of its own, representing the memories and feelings that endure long after the relationship is over.

Through songs like these, Taylor Swift showcases her skilful use of symbolism and metaphor, turning everyday objects and experiences into profound reflections on life, love, and the human condition. It’s this ability to infuse her music with layers of meaning that sets her apart as one of the most compelling songwriters of our time.

Commercial Intent

Taylor Swift is known for writing songs that fascinate large audiences. Critics, on the other hand, are sceptical of Swift’s commercial success. They say that, while her songs top the charts, their commercial success frequently overshadows their creative merit. In the competitive world of pop music, where success is judged by record sales and sold-out arenas, Swift’s critics wonder if her financial success detracts from her song’s literary value.

Although Swift’s songs reach millions of people around the world, her creative value remains debatable. She’s constantly managing commercial success and staying faithful to her talent, balancing pop recognition and critical acclaim. However, in an environment where entertainment and expression intersect, Swift’s music may be worth appreciating for its capacity to bridge the gap between commercial appeal and artistic expression, exceeding the confines of traditional literary discourse.

Cultural and Societal Bias

Cultural and societal biases frequently cast shadows over popular culture, including music, potentially clouding judgments on whether Taylor Swift’s songs may be considered literature. Within literary circles, old-fashioned forms and genres take primacy over modern commercial music, affecting conceptions of what constitutes literature. This bias can lead to songs being excluded from literary discourse, as certain scholars and critics value the written word over the auditory experience provided by music.

However, such biases may obscure the literary value of Swift’s music. While her music may not meet conventional literary requirements, it is indisputably culturally significant and resonates strongly with millions of listeners around the world. By widening the definition of literature to include various forms of artistic expression, such as music, we may see Swift’s contributions as part of a rich and developing literary landscape.

Despite some critics’ concerns about Swift’s commercial appeal, there’s no questioning her ability to balance pop popularity and literary recognition. While cultural biases may sometimes exclude modern music from literary conversations, Swift’s work questions established assumptions of what constitutes literature. By encouraging us to appreciate music’s storytelling power, she expands our understanding of the various types of artistic expression that influence our world.
