The Celebrities Who Are Just as Smart as They Are Talented

Nadya Sharfina · November 14, 2024 · Leave a Comment

"Intelligence isn't limited to academia; it can shine in every field, even in entertainment, where many actors combine talent with remarkable intellect."

Intelligence isn’t confined to academia; it can be found across various fields, including the world of entertainment. While we often associate smart people with scholarly pursuits, there are countless actors and actresses who shine not only for their talent but also for their impressive intellect.

Many of these talented individuals portray smart characters on screen, but they also take on lighthearted and silly roles that may seem less intelligent. However, the actors behind these characters possess remarkable intelligence. One of these celebrities reportedly has an IQ higher than Einstein.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson is widely celebrated for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, where her portrayal of the character’s intellect resonated with audiences. Her passion for acting ignited at age six, leading her to train at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts, where she mastered singing, dancing, and acting. This early dedication shone through on set, where she became known for her impressive ability to deliver her lines in just one take, highlighting her exceptional memory and concentration.

While filming, Watson and her castmates benefited from rigorous tutoring, dedicating up to five hours a day to their studies. Her academic diligence paid off when she took her GCSEs in 2006, achieving an outstanding eight A* and two A grades. Watson continued to excel in her education, taking AS levels in English, Geography, Art, and History of Art before ultimately pursuing three A levels, earning an A in each subject. She attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and later spent a year at Worcester College, Oxford, further demonstrating her commitment to academic excellence.

Beyond her educational pursuits, Watson has established herself as a formidable advocate for gender equality. Appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014, she has used her platform to promote women’s rights. Her influence was recognized when she topped AskMen’s “Top 99 Outstanding Women” list in 2015 and was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world.

Watson also founded a feminist Goodreads book club called “Our Shared Shelf,” encouraging discussions around feminist literature. Her activism extends to environmental justice and climate change, showcasing her dedication to multiple vital causes. You can read more about another young climate activist here: Greta Thunberg’s Influence on Today’s Teen Climate Activists.

The impact of her work on young women’s perceptions of feminism has been profound, often referred to as the “Emma Watson effect,” inspiring many to embrace the feminist label and advocate for gender equality and social justice.

Nolan Gould

If you’re a fan of Modern Family, you’re likely familiar with Nolan Gould, who plays the lovable, clumsy, and sometimes sneaky Luke Dunphy. His character often steals scenes with a mix of silliness and charm, but the real Nolan Gould is quite a different person. Behind the humour and antics of Modern Family’s ‘Luke’, is a young man with a brilliant mind.

Gould’s academic journey is nothing short of impressive. By 2012, he had accelerated four grades in school, showcasing his intellectual capabilities long before most teens consider graduating. His dedication to his studies has earned him a spot in Mensa, the largest and oldest high-IQ society in the world. This prestigious organisation is open to individuals who score at the 98th percentile or higher on standardised intelligence tests.

Gould dedicated considerable time to studying and successfully tested out of high school, ultimately graduating at the young age of 13. This achievement speaks volumes about his commitment to learning and his ability to thrive in a challenging academic environment, even while maintaining a successful acting career.

Lisa Kudrow

Lisa Kudrow is best known for her iconic role as Phoebe Buffay on the beloved sitcom Friends. This quirky character, with her silly antics and ditzy charm, has since been hailed as one of the greatest television characters of all time. While Phoebe often played the clueless friend in the group, Kudrow herself is anything but. Her academic background reveals a sharp intellect that sets her apart in the entertainment industry.

Kudrow holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Vassar College, where she initially intended to follow in her father’s footsteps and become an expert on headaches. While breaking into acting, Kudrow worked alongside her physician father for eight years and gained valuable experience in the medical field. Her dedication to research is evident, as she has credit for a study examining the likelihood of left-handed individuals developing cluster headaches.

Beyond her iconic role in Friends, Kudrow has continued to make significant contributions to the industry as a producer and writer. She serves as a producer on the TLC/NBC reality program Who Do You Think You Are, which has received five Primetime Emmy nominations. Additionally, she created, produced, wrote, and starred in the HBO mockumentary series The Comeback.

Rowan Atkinson

Rowan Atkinson is a household name, thanks to his iconic character, Mr. Bean, who has entertained generations from Baby Boomers to Gen Z. Known for his slapstick humour and silly antics, Atkinson has built a career on playing the bumbling yet lovable character that often leaves audiences in stitches. However, beneath the goofy exterior lies one of the smartest minds in entertainment.

Atkinson boasts an impressive IQ of 178, placing him in a league of intellectuals that includes the likes of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. While neither Einstein or Hawking ever formally took an IQ test, estimates suggest their IQs hover around 160 based on their groundbreaking work and interviews. Atkinson’s score not only surpasses theirs but also highlights a remarkable blend of intelligence and comedic genius that sets him apart in the industry. His contributions to the arts have also been recognized, as he was honoured with the title of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE).

His academic background is equally impressive. Before embarking on his successful acting career, Atkinson excelled in his education, earning top grades in his science A levels. He attended Newcastle University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1975.

In 1935, Atkinson briefly began a PhD at The Queen’s College, Oxford—an institution that holds personal significance, as it’s where his father studied in 1935. Atkinson’s master’s thesis, published in 1978, explored the application of self-tuning control, showcasing his technical expertise. With accolades in both comedy and academia, Rowan Atkinson exemplifies how brilliance and humour can coexist, making him a truly remarkable figure in entertainment.

How Billie Eilish Became Gen Z’s Role Model

Nadya Sharfina · August 20, 2024 · Leave a Comment

"Billie Eilish's influence goes beyond music—she's a voice for mental health, women's rights, climate action, and more, inspiring Gen Z to make a difference."

Billie Eilish is now recognised as one of the most influential pop music artists in the world. The American singer and songwriter first captured the public’s attention in 2015 with her debut single, “Ocean Eyes.” Born on December 18, 2001, Eilish is part of the Gen Z generation, and her impact extends far beyond her music.

Eilish’s influence is not just about her chart-topping hits but also her dedication to various causes. She has a strong track record of political activism, advocating for mental health, women’s rights, climate change awareness, and animal rights. Through her platform, Eilish engages with her generation on these critical issues, inspiring many with her commitment to making a positive difference.

Advocating for Mental Health

Billie Eilish’s music, known for its emotional brand of dark pop, often reflects her personal struggles. Her lyrics and sound have provided a raw, honest portrayal of her lifelong battle with depression. From a young age, Billie experienced severe separation anxiety, leading her to share a bed with her parents until she was 11. This deep-seated anxiety followed her throughout her career.

By mid-2020, Eilish felt overwhelmed and unprepared for her demanding tour schedule, which exacerbated her anxiety. She often faced panic attacks and even cried for hours. Her mental health journey includes a history of self-harm and body dysmorphia, where she struggled with feelings of being overweight and a distorted view of her body. Eilish has been candid about her experience with Tourette Syndrome diagnosed at age 11. Her tics—such as wiggling her ears, raising her eyebrows, and clicking her jaw—come and go but never fully disappear. Despite these challenges, Eilish has been transparent with her fans about her condition and uses her platform to advocate for mental health awareness.

In a notable PSA for the ‘Seize the Awkward’ campaign, Eilish emphasised the importance of open communication. She believes it’s crucial to seek help and support without feeling weak, and stresses the importance of being there for families and friends who are struggling.

Speaking Out on Women’s Rights

Billie Eilish has consistently used her platform to speak out about women’s rights and gender equality. She has addressed these issues on numerous occasions, bringing attention to the challenges women face, including body shaming and the double standards imposed on their appearances.

In 2020, Eilish took a step by writing and producing the short film Not My Responsibility. This was a direct response to the body shaming she had faced and the unfair expectations placed on women’s bodies. Through the film, she confronted these issues head-on, emphasising the importance of self-acceptance and challenging societal norms.

Eilish has also spoken about the sexual exploitation of young women by men, highlighting this critical issue as part of her broader advocacy for women’s rights. Her openness about these topics reflects her commitment to raising awareness and driving conversations that aim to address and rectify gender-based injustices.

Promoting Greener Practices

Billie Eilish has made significant efforts to address the climate crisis through her work and personal choices. Her “All the Good Girls Go to Hell” music video critiques the ignorance surrounding rising sea levels and underscores the urgency of environmental action. Eilish has collaborated with REVERB, a company that specialises in sustainability within the entertainment industry, to make her tours more eco-friendly. During her tours, she focuses on greener practices such as providing fans with free water bottle refills to reduce plastic waste and offering vegetarian meals to her crew to lessen the environmental impact of meat production.

In 2023, she took a strong stance on reducing her carbon footprint by declaring her refusal to travel by private jet. This decision further reflects her dedication to minimising her environmental impact and sets an example for both her generation and the wider industry.

Influence on Plant-Based Living

Billie Eilish is a notable advocate for animal rights and is working to end animal agriculture through various initiatives. She promotes a plant-based diet, not just for ethical reasons, but also for its health benefits. By encouraging her fans, Eilish highlights how such a diet can improve overall well-being while supporting animal welfare.

She has shared vegan recipes on social media, including popular options like vegan cookies and peanut butter chocolate chunk gluten-free treats. These posts help make plant-based eating more accessible and appealing to her millions of followers.

Her commitment extends to legislative support as well. Eilish has actively backed the Healthy Future Students and Earth Act, advocating for a federal vegan school lunch program. This effort aims to integrate plant-based meals into school systems, promoting healthier and more sustainable eating habits from a young age.

In addition to her advocacy work, she has taken her commitment further by opening a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles with her brother, a singer-songwriter and record producer, Finneas. Partnering with vegan restaurateur Nic Adler, they launched Argento, a vegan Italian restaurant.

Her influence and contributions were recognised when she was named PETA’s 2021 Person of the Year. Eilish also made a significant impact as a Met Gala co-chair, ensuring that the event served exclusively vegan meals for the first time ever.

Supporting Sustainable Fashion

In 2021, Billie Eilish persuaded the Oscar de la Renta team to stop using fur in their collections. At the Met Gala in 2022, Eilish made a notable fashion statement by wearing a stunning Gucci dress crafted entirely from recycled materials. Eilish avoids working with brands that support the fur industry, ensuring her fashion collaborations are in line with her values.

Her commitment to sustainability extends into her partnerships as well. She launched several collaborations with Nike, a brand known for its efforts to reduce environmental impact. Nike diverts 99% of its footwear manufacturing waste from landfills, and Eilish’s collaborations with the brand emphasise this commitment. She designed two exclusive pairs of Air Jordans made from 100% vegan materials and over 20% recycled content. One pair features a tan colour representing her “Happier Than Ever” era, while the other comes in a vibrant lime green.

Eilish has also ventured into vegan perfumes. Launched in fall 2021 and followed by November 2022, her fragrances are crafted with notes of palo santo, ebony, Italian bergamot, apple blossom, papyrus, black pepper, and wild wet poppy flowers. These products further reflect her dedication to eco-friendly and cruelty-free choices in every aspect of her work. Through these efforts, Eilish continues to advocate for a more sustainable and ethical approach to fashion.

BTS: Pioneering a New Era of K-Pop

Rebecca Samuel · April 12, 2023 · Leave a Comment

"Young recruits don’t only have a lot to learn from BTS’ charitable contributions, this group of young men are also admired for their infallible work ethic. "

BTS has over 30 million followers at the time of writing, The #BTSArmy used to consist mostly of teenagers and young people, but data shows that a larger percentage of aged 24-35 have also enlisted, and this number is only growing.

BTS debuted in 2013 with their album ‘2 Cool 4 Skool’. They didn’t exactly become popular right away, but their hit single ‘I NEED U’ propelled them to stardom. The group continues to write and produce their own songs often, and the undeniable vulnerability and emotion they bring to their music has captured hearts all over the world.

Unlike many other celebrities who do not use their massive platforms for anything other than garnering attention or more fame, BTS have – thankfully – taken the path woefully less travelled. One of their wonderful contributions include the highly publicized ‘Love Myself’ campaign, which focuses on anti-violence, utilizing the hashtag #ENDViolence. Profits from album sales have gone to a plethora of social programmes supported by UNICEF Korea such as prevention of violence against children and teens as well as support programs for the victims of violence. As the first artists in Korea to raise funds for global campaigns, they have indeed made their mark in ways that inspire their legions of fans.

In 2018, Suga sent gifts of Korean beef to 39 orphanages. An odd sounding contribution perhaps, except that it was from a promise having to be fulfilled. At a fan event in 2014, Suga asked fans, “What do you want to eat?” Fans responded that they wanted meat, and Suga made the promise then and there, “I’ll make a lot of money and buy meat for you.” While most celebrities – and the fans – would have brushed it off as a joke or a funny comment made in the moment, the 29 year old remembered, and made sure the contribution was meaningful by donating to orphanages under the name ‘ARMY’ as a dedication to fans.

Young recruits don’t only have a lot to learn from BTS’ charitable contributions, this group of young men are also admired for their infallible work ethic. From their humble beginnings to present day, they reportedly continue to work on songs and music even while on tour, in hotels, planes and just about wherever and whenever they can squeeze time in. Most people expect young stars to be enjoying the money and the fame, and while surely BTS does so, they do it without sitting back comfortably, which assures fans that there are plenty of years left in this dynamic troupe.

Celebrities often influence people, especially young ones in intense, sometimes irreversible ways. BTS often shows their army that they haven’t been recruited in vain, and that together, they will fight on and win life’s battles to come.
